Steel structures form the backbone of modern construction, from residential builds through to large-scale commercial and industrial developments. While the finished structure is what is visible, much of the project’s success is determined long before fabrication begins. Steel shop detailing plays a key role in bridging engineering design and fabrication, ensuring steel components are accurately translated into buildable instructions.
What is steel shop detailing?
Steel shop detailing involves producing highly accurate fabrication drawings and 3D models based on structural engineering design. These drawings provide fabricators with the detailed information required to manufacture and assemble steel components correctly, including beams, columns, connections, bolts, welds, grades, and finishes.
Using Tekla Structures, detailed 3D models are created to ensure accuracy and coordination. This helps align design intent with fabrication processes, including compatibility with modern fabrication machinery, reducing errors and improving efficiency throughout the build process.
Why accuracy in detailing matters
Accuracy in steel detailing is essential because errors or inconsistencies can result in fabrication issues, delays, and additional costs during construction. Clear and precise documentation helps eliminate uncertainty for fabricators and ensures components are manufactured correctly the first time.
When detailing is accurate and well coordinated, it supports smoother fabrication and installation, reduces rework, and helps ensure that structural requirements and engineering standards are met. This contributes directly to improved efficiency on site and better overall project outcomes.
How we support steel fabrication projects
Our steel shop detailing services are delivered across residential, rural, commercial, and industrial projects. We provide accurate 3D modelling and fabrication drawings, including proposal drawings, 2D shop drawings with marking plans and elevations, and detailed structural steel documentation.
We also support seismic retrofitting and structural upgrades, steel façade detailing, and coordination of RFIs and design-related queries during the detailing process.
Project example: ADA Warehouse, Palmerston North
The ADA Warehouse development in Palmerston North was delivered for client PMB Landco in 2021 and involved a range of consultancy services, including structural engineering, civil engineering, surveying, and fabrication shop detailing.
The project was a ground-up development that required close coordination between the client and multiple consultants throughout conceptual design, detailed design, and construction monitoring stages. Initial site survey work, including topography and set-out, ensured the development was positioned correctly within site boundaries and consent requirements.
The structural design included a clear-span warehouse measuring 35 metres by 75 metres and a two-storey office building incorporating precast concrete panels. A large covered canopy was also designed using a portal frame structure integrated into the main warehouse.
Following completion of the structural design, the steel shop detailing team produced detailed fabrication drawings to support the manufacture of approximately 230 tonnes of steel with millimetre-level accuracy.
The civil engineering scope included stormwater management design, pavement design for heavy truck movements, and carparking areas. Site challenges included existing services, poor ground conditions requiring engineered fill, fire suppression requirements, and varying pavement and flooring levels and types.
Due to a strict project timeline, the team also provided ongoing construction monitoring, testing, and project sign-off across the different disciplines as required.
Built for modern fabrication workflows
We utilise Tekla Structures to develop accurate 3D models that support modern steel fabrication workflows. This allows detailing outputs to be aligned with fabrication processes and machinery, helping improve accuracy and coordination between design and manufacturing.
Working in a coordinated digital environment helps reduce errors, improve communication between stakeholders, and support a more efficient transition from design to fabrication and installation.
Supporting better project outcomes
Steel shop detailing plays an important role in ensuring construction projects are delivered efficiently and accurately. When done well, it helps reduce errors, improve coordination, and support compliance with engineering and structural requirements.
It also contributes to better communication between engineers, fabricators, and contractors, helping ensure that the final structure reflects the original design intent.
